Two officers sat at the kitchen table when Greg rushed in, panting from running through the house. âDid you find her?â
Holly shook her head. âNot yet. Iâm giving these officers all her information now. I still need to get her picture.â
âIâll get one.â He turned to go to the family room and almost ran straight into Paige and Lucy. âLucy,â he cried, dropping to his knees to give her a hug.
âHi, Daddy. Why are the police here?â
Holly dropped down beside Greg and pulled Lucy toward her. âOh, Lucy, we were so worried.â She glared up at Paige. âWhere the hell were you?â
Paige pulled back. âWe went for a walk. I didnât think we were gone that long.â She let her mouth hang open, unsure of what else to say.
âWe went on a scavenger hunt.â Lucy squealed with excitement about their adventure. âWe had to find a rock and a stick andâ¦â She ticked the items off on her fingers as she went through the list.
âLucy, honey, why donât you go up to your room for a little bit and play before dinner. Daddy and I need to talk to Paige for a minute.â
âOkay.â Lucy put two hands on the stairs and hopped all the way up.
Holly glared at Paige again. âKitchen. Now.â She pointed to the two officers that had stood to leave.
Paige brushed past Holly, grabbed a bottle of water from the refrigerator, and sat at the table. âIâm really sorry, Aunt Holly. I didnât think it was that big of a deal. We were looking for something to do and itâs so nice outside.â
âYou stay here for a minute. Greg, I need to speak to you.â She walked the officers to the door and thanked them for coming out so quickly. As an afterthought, she also apologized for the false alarm. In truth, she felt stupid for not considering that the girls may have gone for a walk. She used to do it every day when she was young and Paige was right, the weather was beautiful. She should be thankful they were outside, enjoying nature. She led Greg upstairs to his office.
âYou called the cops for that?â His eyes narrowed and he crossed his arms.
âListen. I know youâre mad about the police; I get it.â
âNo, you donât get it. Paige is staying here and there is nothing legal about it. We are not her guardians, sheâs still a minor, and we donât even have a way to get a hold of her mother. The police have no idea whatâs going on with the bruise on Lucyâs face and I watched them both staring at her when she turned to go up the stairs. Nothing good is going to come from this, Holly.â
âYou need to hear me out. I think Monica is behind everything thatâs been going on lately. And I no longer believe Paige is her daughter.â
âHave you completely lost your mind? âGreg rubbed his hands up and down his face. âWhat has gotten into you?â
âI went
