Two officers sat at the kitchen table when Greg rushed in, panting from running through the house. “Did you find her?”

Holly shook her head. “Not yet. I’m giving these officers all her information now. I still need to get her picture.”

“I’ll get one.” He turned to go to the family room and almost ran straight into Paige and Lucy. “Lucy,” he cried, dropping to his knees to give her a hug.

“Hi, Daddy. Why are the police here?”

Holly dropped down beside Greg and pulled Lucy toward her. “Oh, Lucy, we were so worried.” She glared up at Paige. “Where the hell were you?”

Paige pulled back. “We went for a walk. I didn’t think we were gone that long.” She let her mouth hang open, unsure of what else to say.

“We went on a scavenger hunt.” Lucy squealed with excitement about their adventure. “We had to find a rock and a stick and…” She ticked the items off on her fingers as she went through the list.

“Lucy, honey, why don’t you go up to your room for a little bit and play before dinner. Daddy and I need to talk to Paige for a minute.”

“Okay.” Lucy put two hands on the stairs and hopped all the way up.

Holly glared at Paige again. “Kitchen. Now.” She pointed to the two officers that had stood to leave.

Paige brushed past Holly, grabbed a bottle of water from the refrigerator, and sat at the table. “I’m really sorry, Aunt Holly. I didn’t think it was that big of a deal. We were looking for something to do and it’s so nice outside.”

“You stay here for a minute. Greg, I need to speak to you.” She walked the officers to the door and thanked them for coming out so quickly. As an afterthought, she also apologized for the false alarm. In truth, she felt stupid for not considering that the girls may have gone for a walk. She used to do it every day when she was young and Paige was right, the weather was beautiful. She should be thankful they were outside, enjoying nature. She led Greg upstairs to his office.

“You called the cops for that?” His eyes narrowed and he crossed his arms.

“Listen. I know you’re mad about the police; I get it.”

“No, you don’t get it. Paige is staying here and there is nothing legal about it. We are not her guardians, she’s still a minor, and we don’t even have a way to get a hold of her mother. The police have no idea what’s going on with the bruise on Lucy’s face and I watched them both staring at her when she turned to go up the stairs. Nothing good is going to come from this, Holly.”

“You need to hear me out. I think Monica is behind everything that’s been going on lately. And I no longer believe Paige is her daughter.”

“Have you completely lost your mind? “Greg rubbed his hands up and down his face. “What has gotten into you?”

“I went
